Woman Abuse Prevention Month

Show women experiencing abuse in they are not alone by attending an awareness event

Click on the items below to learn about public events and other activities to raise awareness during Woman Abuse Prevention Month in November.

Some events also extend into December during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The 16 Days start on November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and end on December 10 (Human Rights Day).

New events and details may be added as they are confirmed.

Regional Flag Raising - Monday, November 24

The Niagara Region will be hosting a "Wrapped in Courage" flag raising ceremony on November 24th at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the event, local service agencies will be setting up an information fair from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Municipal Flag Raisings - Tuesday, November 25

Show women experiencing abuse that they are not alone by joining your local municipality at a "Wrapped in Courage" flag raising on November 25. Each of these municipalities has also passed a proclamation declaring November 25th the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, demonstrating their commitment to ending gender-based violence.

9:00 a.m. -Wainfleet (Town Hall foyer - 31940 Hwy #3)

9:30 a.m. - Fort Erie (Fort Erie Town Hall - 1 Municipal Centre Dr.)

10:00 a.m. - Pelham (Meridian Community Centre - 100 Meridian Wy)

10:00 a.m. - Port Colborne (City Hall - 66 Charlotte St)

11:00 a.m. - Welland (City Hall - 60 East Main St.)

Various local landmarks will be illuminated to raise awareness during Woman Abuse Prevention Month including:

Niagara Falls 

November 1 - From 10 p.m. - 10:15 p.m., the Canadian and American Falls will glow purple in recognition of Woman Abuse Prevention Month. View flyer.

November 25 - From 10 p.m. - 10:15 p.m., the Canadian and American Falls will glow orange in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

Pelham

November 25 - The Pelham Arches will glow purple this evening.

Port Colborne

November 25-December 10 - The Port Colborne Cupola will be illuminated every evening to recognize the 16 days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

Niagara Region Vigil to Remember and Honour Lives Lost to Femicide

Date: Thursday, December 4

Location: Location: Niagara Region Headquarters 1815 Sir Issac Brock Way (Atrium and Courtyard)

Time: 5:00 p.m

Candlelight Vigil hosted by the Canadian Federation of University Women St. Catharines

Date: Saturday, December 6

Location: Welland Canal (South of Glendale Bridge 5, on west side of canal)

Time: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Candlelight Vigil hosted by Zonta Clubs of Niagara Falls and St. Catharines 

This year's event will feature keynote speaker Samantha Forbes, Manager of Prevention and Public Education at Birchway Niagara.

Virtual Lunch & Learn - Tuesday, November 18 (noon-1 p.m.)

Join Birchway Niagara for an engaging online discussion about the 16 Days of Activism and how you can help raise awareness this year. Topics will include:

  • the background of 16 Days of Activism
  • a discussion of United Nations' theme for this year: End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls
  • the impact of the manosphere, especially online
  • how you can be an ally during the 16 Days of Activism and throughout the year
  • information about local community events related to the 16 Days

As part of the 16 Days of Activism for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Welland and District plan to display red dresses in various locations in Niagara. These installations, inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black, acknowledge and pay tribute to the many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Each red dress represents a life lost and reminds us of the ongoing impact of the colonialism on the lives of Indigenous women and girls. 

Dresses will be on display during the 16 Days from November 25 to December 10. Locations will include (additional locations may be added):

  • The Meridian Centre, Fonthill
  • Ridgeville
  • Lincoln Pelham Library (Fenwick/Maple Acre Branch)
  • Chippawa Park, Welland
  • Welland City Hall
  • Niagara Centre YMCA, Welland
  • Niagara College, Welland
  • Port Colborne Public Library
  • Wainfleet Public Library

Breakfast to End Gender-Based Violence - Tuesday, November 4 - 7 a.m. - 9 a.m.
