Before coming to Birchway, my daughter and I were living in a home with verbal and physical abuse. I had always kept my daughter safe in the past, but for the first time I found myself scared, alone and not knowing what to do.
I was speaking to my boss at my then job and I broke down crying because I felt so helpless. I was referred to a shelter and I called right away after leaving work. However, they were at capacity and referred me to Birchway Niagara. I called immediately and started explaining my situation. It was pouring rain outside as I cried my eyes out in despair.
I spoke to an angel named Lori, a counsellor at Birchway. I explained to her how scared I was and how I wanted to leave with my daughter to ensure our safety. I wasn’t sure how to leave as the person we were staying with is very violent and aggressive. I didn’t want to traumatize my daughter any further than she already was.
Lori helped me to figure out a plan so I could leave without anyone knowing.
I was scared, but she helped me to build up the strength and courage I needed to get us out and in a safe environment. She assured me that a room would be available and waiting for my daughter and me. That day I was nervous, but I picked up my daughter from school and explained everything to her and what the plan was. Later that night, we left quickly and quietly.
We made it to Birchway, and after a short while we were in our room. My daughter said to me, “Mom I am so happy we got out of there. I don’t feel scared anymore”.
It made me feel happy that she felt safe and protected and sad that she had to experience such trauma. I was determined to help her overcome all the anxieties, and with the help of the youth counsellors, I saw my daughter coming back to her happy self.
I will forever be grateful for Birchway. They were there for me in more ways than I could have ever imagined.
When I needed someone to speak to, there was always someone there ready to listen to me and help me figure everything out. If I needed something, all I had to do was ask. Birchway has given me back my smile, my sense of safety, courage, and knowledge that I am not alone.
