Domestic Violence Statistics
In 2023, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability documents that 187 women and girls were violently killed in Canada.
From November 26, 2022, to November 25, 2023, 62 women and girls in Ontario lost their lives to gender-based violence in Ontario. **
During the last Statistics Canada “snapshot” date in 2023, 7,581 women and children were living in shelters for victims of abuse in Canada. 45% of residents were children. 29% of women living in a domestic violence shelter, identified as First Nations, Métis or Inuit, indicating that Indigenous persons experience abuse at a higher rate than the general population.*
