Volunteers Making a Difference

Birchway Niagara would not exist without the commitment of community volunteers who dreamed of creating a place for women and children who were not safe in their homes.

Today, the volunteer spirit is still alive and well at Birchway with nearly 200 volunteers donating their time annually. While we can’t highlight every volunteer who generously donates their time and talents, we would like to introduce you to some of the amazing souls who we are honoured to work alongside. With their help, there will always a place to turn when a woman experiencing abuse needs support.

Meet our “Book Sorters”

Have you ever wondered how the Book Riot is so well organized? This annual used charity book sale (Canada’s biggest and best!) is the result of a true community effort. It is almost completely volunteer-driven, with much of the work going on behind the scenes well before the books make it to the sale location.

Most Tuesday mornings (and sometimes Thursdays and Saturdays too!), you will find a team of dedicated “book sorters” at Apple Self-Storage hard at work separating the week’s book donations into categories. By donating over 1000 hours each year, this team ensures that every book is boxed and ready to head to the appropriate sale table when it gets to the Gale Centre in June. If you found exactly what you were looking for at last year’s sale, you can thank the book sorters!

The book sorting team is made up of kind-hearted souls (and not surprisingly includes a number of retired teachers, a librarian and book lovers from other walks of life) who enjoy each other’s company and helping their community… and the odd debate about which category a book truly belongs in.

Birchway Niagara’s most successful fundraiser could not continue to be one of Niagara’s most anticipated events without each and every one of our dedicated volunteers. THANK YOU!
