Get Help for Someone Else

Are you concerned about someone who may be experiencing abuse? There are a number of things you can do to help your friend, family member or colleague.

Tell her if you think she is in immediate danger.

Call 9-1-1 if the situation is dangerous and it is safe for you to do so.

Learn to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship and let her know if you see these signs in her relationship.

Let her know that you are always available to listen and be supportive. Accept that it might take her a while to open up.

Build her self-esteem (e.g., remind her that she deserves to be treated with respect).

Let her know that services like Brichway Niagara exist to help.

Let her know that she doesn’t have to leave her partner to get help.

Let her know that the abuse is not her fault.

Let her make her own choices about what is best for her.

If you are worried for the emotional and physical safety of her children, contact Family and Children’s Services.

Do not judge her.

Do not criticize her for staying or tell her to leave. Leaving an abusive relationship can be difficult and dangerous. Be patient as she weighs her options.

Help her to create a safety plan for herself and her children.
